There is no politician in recent memory who seems more a product of her handlers than Hillary Clinton. But her handlers in 2008 did hardly anything for her, and now you wonder if the reinforcements she’s brought in this time are doing any better, or giving her better advice. Because all she continues to do is serve this whole thing up for Donald Trump.
The other day she said that she was going to ask Bill Clinton to help her with the economy. She did this in a political season when Trump has sold himself two ways, apart from walls and Muslim bans and generally going nuclear: He has sold strength and sold himself as a manager.
But now, even before Hillary Clinton has finished the messy business of actually putting away Bernie Sanders, she says that her idea to fix messy economic problems in this country is to have her husband do it, as if she’s putting him underneath the kitchen sink with a wrench to fix a leaky faucet.
Hillary Clinton’s use of her husband in campaign and overuse of gender card just might undermine her message and chances of winning the White House.
The only surprising thing about Trump’s response is that it took him until Tuesday on Twitter:
“Crooked Hillary said her husband is going to be in charge of the economy. If so, he should run, not her.”

The next line from him is a shot, not even veiled, at a Chappaqua neighbor of the Clintons’ rumored to be a great and good friend of the former President’s. At a time when you keep hoping that it will just be Hillary Clinton against Donald Trump in the general election, because that will be enough of a contest, even as mean as it already is, it is Hillary Clinton who continues to put a target on her husband’s back; and continues to act as if her most dangerous opponent in the fall will be herself.
She continues to believe her husband is some great political asset, 16 years after he left office. But every time she drags him out on the stage, reminding everybody about what he did back in the ’90s, you start to imagine Phil Jackson acting as if past glory is going to help him save the New York Knicks.

She says she’s going to put him “in charge of revitalizing the economy, because, you know, he knows how to do it.” She talks about what he’s going to do in coal country, to which she’s already done such a bangup job endearing herself, and in inner cities, and does sound like Jackson talking about how he used to do it with Michael Jordan.
You always wonder how talking this much about what her husband did in the past is going to help her with the young.
Hillary Clinton having lived in the White House can’t assure her spot as President.
It is not just her (flawed) strategy with her husband, certainly. Now this rich super PAC, Priorities USA Action, makes a $6 million buy for attack ads in Ohio and Florida and Nevada that will highlight some of Trump’s comments about women, ads that will run over the next three weeks. Why does Priorities USA Action have the money to run ads like that, by the way? Because it has raised more money to stop Trump from getting elected than it did four years ago to get Barack Obama reelected.
But every time the Clinton campaign finds another way to call Trump a sexist — the first time she did it, months ago, Trump put Bill Clinton’s infidelities into play at a speed almost as fast as the speed of light — he goes right after her husband’s past infidelities.

“And they think they’re going to spend all that money to degrade me,” Trump says.
It is difficult to decide sometimes whether Hillary Clinton is overplaying the gender card in this campaign, or simply playing into Trump’s hands. But somebody needs to show how this is all working for her. She is already beating Trump, in just about every poll, with women. Now this kind of money is spent in three states with ads about women. What, is the end game for the Clinton campaign to get a thousand percent of the women’s vote? A million?

Again: How does that help her with the young, disaffected voters that Bernie Sanders will leave behind? How does any of this help her reach out to them? And why does she think going after Trump on women will work for her better than it did the other day for The New York Times?
Women and African-Americans and Hispanics, essential elements of the traditional Democratic coalition, still ought to make her the favorite to win in the fall. But she was the favorite to beat Obama eight years ago, until she and the geniuses handling her campaign got outmaneuvered by David Axelrod and David Plouffe at every turn.
People don’t want to know what Hillary Clinton’s husband did, and that means with governance. They want to know what she’s going to do. She’s absolutely allowed to play the woman card against Donald Trump. But she better woman up a lot better than this.
